VIA FRANCIGENA 4 - FROM PARMA TO AULLA 2010 Code: L023-4
In medieval centuries a wide network of streets and routes characterizing Europe and these streets were crossed from pilgrims, high priests or poor monks, and also from merchants and nobles. These roads headed towards three main destinations: San James of Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem. Along these routes, a great number of abbeys and monasteries were built, but also hospitals and shelters which could cater to the needs of the ever increasing flow of people. The way along which pilgrims went walking to Rome to visit St Peter’s tomb was the “Via Francigena” and the name means probably “way done by Franks”. It is the same route drawn up in 990 from Sigeric, the Archibishop of Canterbury, traveled to Rome in order to be consecrated by the Pope. Today the Francigena Way has been rediscovered and it is an ancient way for new pilgrims. From the Padana plain to Apennines, towards the Tyrrhenian sea. This week marks the switch from the Emilia plains, with its fields, wine groves and farmhouses, to the Apennine’s landscape, from whose tops there is an overlook on the Tyrrhenian sea. The tour starts from Parma, ancient ducal town with a rich cultural life and continues across typical villages and mountain parishes, some of them risen on the Via Francigena, alternated along the way. The Cisa Pass, 1045 m above the sea level, marks the border between the two regions: behind, the hill and mountains that rises gradual and in front the steep slopes that descent to Tuscany.
